We were invited to do a keynote presentation at the Exposome.nl conference on the opportunities and challenges of using agent-based models for simulating social systems. The 'exposome' is "the totality of human-environmental interactions", and its main application is in human health. The conference attracted a wide range of disciplines from the molecular to the social sciences, and agent-based modelling has a number of potential use-cases in the area, as was ably demonstrated by the other keynote presenter, Cathryn Tonne. With human exposure to the environment being a function of chemicals in the environment, personal behaviour, interpersonal interactions and regional planning, studying the exposome with agent-based simulation is a potential use-case for exascale social simulation.
