Michael Batty CBE FRS FBA has directed two research centres and a department (CASA UCL 1995-2011; the NSF NCGIA 1990-1995; City Planning, Cardiff, 1985- 1990). He is one of the most highly cited urban planners making major contributions to the science of the built environment (The New Science of Cities, MIT Press, 2013, winner of the Alonso Prize of the Regional Science Association in 2017). He has experience of running large research programmes (e.g. the ERC Advanced Grant Mechanicity 2011-16). His research work involves the development of data systems and computer models of cities and regions, and he has published many books and articles in this area, e.g. Cities and Complexity (MIT Press, 2007, which won the Alonso Prize of the Regional Science Association in 2011). His most recent book Inventing Future Cities was published by MIT Press in late 2018. He is a co-editor of Urban Informatics (Springer, 2021), and editor of the journal Environment and Planning B.
